UNCERTAINTY: The Secret Weapon for High-Performing Leaders

"In uncertainty, there's room to act." This powerful quote from Rebecca Solnit captures an essential truth about leadership that most people miss. While many view uncertainty as something to avoid or overcome, it represents your greatest opportunity for meaningful impact.
When circumstances are certain, boundaries are already defined. Someone else has created the box you're operating within. However, uncertainty offers open space where your imagination, ideas, and vision can take shape without predetermined limitations.
The Status Quo Resistance
Uncertainty faces powerful opposition—not from people but from the status quo. Our established systems and thought patterns are designed to make us comfortable, sedentary, and complacent. They push back against anything that threatens existing structures.
This comfort feels good temporarily but undermines long-term growth. If you're serious about creating the future rather than merely surviving it, you must develop a different relationship with uncertainty.
The Leadership Distinction
Not everyone responds to uncertainty the same way. When boundaries aren't clearly defined, and rules haven't been established, certain people naturally step forward to create structure and direction. This impulse—to move into an undefined space and establish order—fundamentally defines leadership.
I see this pattern everywhere, from organizations to families. My eight-year-old son demonstrates it when he encounters unstructured situations. Rather than waiting for someone else to define parameters, he instinctively moves to establish them himself.
This distinction matters because not everyone needs to lead.
Despite popular messaging that everyone should aspire to leadership positions, different roles serve different purposes. The key is recognizing your natural orientation toward uncertainty and leveraging it appropriately.
Taking Action When Others Won't
True leaders recognize that certainty rarely exists in meaningful situations. They understand that waiting for perfect clarity before acting means surrendering control to external forces.
The only real certainty is that action creates movement. Whether that action leads to the best possible outcome remains to be seen, but movement creates opportunities for adjustment and progress that stagnation never will.
Too many people in leadership positions today act like followers—waiting for certainty that will never arrive, pandering to the status quo, or expecting someone else to make difficult decisions first.
TAKE Action
Identify an area of uncertainty in your work or life that you've been avoiding.
Ask yourself: "What opportunity might exist within this undefined space?"
Take one concrete action this week that moves into uncertainty rather than waiting for clarity.
Notice your emotional response to ambiguous situations—do you instinctively create structure or wait for others to define it?
Uncertainty isn't something to fear—it's where your greatest opportunities for impact exist. Embrace it, move into it, and discover the leadership edge others miss while waiting for clarity that never comes.
