THINK FOR YOURSELF: Reclaiming Your Future from External Influences

Are you outsourcing your future to someone else's vision? Most people unconsciously surrender their agency to external influences—political parties, mentors, authors, experts—who tell them how the future will unfold and what they should do about it.

This passive approach to the future has never been more dangerous than it is today. We live in one of the most extraordinary periods in human history, with unprecedented opportunities to shape what comes next. Squandering this moment on someone else's vision means settling for whatever future gets handed to you.

The Critical Thinking Gap

The distinction between knowing HOW to think about the future and WHAT to think about it represents the difference between creating your path and following someone else's. This isn't about dismissing expertise—it's about engaging with it critically rather than accepting it blindly.

When you encounter ideas about the future—whether from me or anyone else—take what resonates, but don't make decisions solely based on those perspectives. The goal isn't to reject expert guidance but to develop your capacity for independent thought alongside it.

Breaking Free from External Influence

We're constantly bombarded with influences shaping our view of what's possible. Social media, news outlets, and even well-meaning mentors push narratives that may not align with your values or goals. Without critical examination, these external voices can drown out your own.

Unlike any previous generation, you have unprecedented tools to challenge dominant narratives and contribute your perspective. But this opportunity comes with responsibility—to think deeply rather than react superficially.

I see too many people jumping on bandwagons, adding hashtags, and supporting causes without genuine reflection. They're influenced more than influencing, reacting more than creating. This mindless participation undermines the very power they could be exercising.

A Mindset, Not an Age

This approach to the future isn't about being young or old—it's about mindset. If you have another breath to draw, you have a future to shape.

The question is whether you'll do so intentionally or by default. This awareness transforms how you engage with information, opportunities, and challenges.

Thinking differently about the future means recognizing that every decision moves you toward creating the future you want or accepting whatever comes by default.

TAKE Action
  1. Identify three sources that currently influence your thinking about the future. How often do you question their assumptions?

  2. Before sharing or supporting an idea online, take five minutes to consider its deeper implications and whether it truly aligns with your values.

  3. Practice asking "why?" about established processes or beliefs in your industry or community.

  4. Create space each week for independent reflection on where you're headed and whether that direction truly reflects your intentions.

Don't settle for someone else's vision of what's possible. Learn how to think about the future, not just what to think about it. Your voice and your perspective matter—use them wisely.
