INNOVATION VS ACCOMMODATION: Are You Really Changing the Game?

When you hear the word "innovation," what comes to mind? For most companies, it's about adding new features, upgrading existing processes, or making things faster and more efficient. But is that really innovation? Or is it just accommodation—making small adjustments to keep up with the status quo?

Take the latest iPhone, for example. Adding a third camera or boosting processing power might seem impressive, but it doesn't fundamentally change how we interact with technology or each other. It's an improvement, sure, but it's not a game-changer.

The Innovation Illusion

True innovation forces businesses to rethink who they are at their core. It's not about doing the same thing better—it's about doing something entirely different. This kind of transformation requires letting go of past successes that no longer serve the future and embracing new ways of thinking.

Consider Facebook. It started as a simple tool for college students to connect, but it evolved into a platform that catalyzed political revolutions and reshaped global communication. That kind of transformation didn't happen by accident—it happened because someone asked, "What else is possible?"

How to Think More Innovatively

If you want to foster true innovation, you need to expand your perspective. Here's how:

  1. Identify major drivers of change: Look at technologies like AI, big data, or gene editing. These are reshaping industries in ways we're only beginning to understand. Don't just track everything superficially—choose one area and study it deeply.

  2. Challenge baseline assumptions: Most predictions about technology simply project current trends forward without considering radical shifts. Ask deeper questions about what could happen beyond these linear projections.

  3. Explore unintended impacts: Think about how these technologies might influence areas beyond their original design. For example, who could have predicted that Facebook would become a tool for political revolutions? The most powerful innovations often emerge when technologies find unexpected applications in new domains.

The Innovation Paradox

True innovation often means disrupting yourself before someone else does. It's not easy—it requires asking tough questions and being willing to challenge your own assumptions. But the alternative is worse: staying comfortable while the world moves on without you.

This creates a tension for many organizations. They claim to want innovation while simultaneously protecting existing revenue streams and business models. Real innovation demands the courage to question everything—including your most profitable products and services.

TAKE ACTION

  1. Choose a major technological trend (AI, blockchain, etc.) and research its current applications.

  2. Identify the baseline assumptions about its future impact in your industry.

  3. Brainstorm three ways this technology could disrupt your business model in unexpected ways.

  4. Develop a strategy to either leverage or mitigate these potential disruptions.

True innovation isn't about keeping up—it's about leading the way. Are you ready to change the game?
